Project Detail
Imply provides an enterprise product that provides application performance monitoring. Customers buy the product on monthly or annual basis and pricing is consumption based. As the Platform PM, one of the many areas of responsibility is to provide usage metering capabilities The product is used by 1 or more teams within the customer's environment. The customer wants full visibility into the usage of each team. In some cases, customers might exceed the allocation in the contract and they might have to pay overages to become compliant. Currently, the customer gets a giant spreadsheet in email once a quarter that includes the usage info. This process is error-prone, manual and high overhead. Create a better process to increase the customer experience and build better trust around billing for cloud resources.

Challenge
The current manual process of sending a giant spreadsheet to customers once a quarter was error-prone, high overhead, and lacked real-time visibility into usage. The goal was to provide full visibility into the usage of each team within the customer's environment while maintaining a consumption-based pricing model.
During the implementation process, we faced several challenges. The first challenge was data collection and integration. We needed to gather usage data from various sources within the customer's infrastructure and integrate it with different platforms, applications, and data formats. This required coordination with multiple teams or third-party vendors.
Ensuring the granularity and accuracy of usage data was another challenge we encountered. We had to optimize our data processing capabilities to handle large volumes of real-time data and prevent data discrepancies or inconsistencies that could impact the accuracy of usage reporting. We also faced challenges in designing the pricing model, ensuring data privacy and security, and achieving user adoption.

I took a proactive approach to develop an enhanced solution. First, I conducted thorough research to understand the pain points of our customers and their specific requirements. I collaborated closely with the engineering team to design and implement a robust data collection system that could integrate seamlessly with various data sources and platforms.
To ensure data accuracy and granularity, I worked closely with data engineers to implement automated validation checks and error handling mechanisms. We conducted rigorous testing and validation to verify the accuracy of the usage data and made necessary adjustments to minimize discrepancies. Additionally, we focused on optimizing the data processing capabilities to handle large volumes of real-time data without compromising performance.
In collaboration with the pricing team, we developed a comprehensive pricing model that considered different variables, thresholds, and tiers. This ensured accurate billing and accounted for overage charges when customers exceeded their allocated usage. We provided clear documentation and conducted customer education sessions to ensure transparency and understanding of the pricing model.
Security and privacy were paramount concerns, so I collaborated with our security team to implement stringent access controls and encryption measures. This helped safeguard customer data and ensured compliance with data privacy regulations.
To enhance user experience and adoption, I engaged with the design team to create intuitive and user-friendly usage reports. We incorporated customizable features, allowing customers to tailor the reports according to their specific needs and preferences. I coordinated closely with the customer success team to provide comprehensive training materials and support documentation. This facilitated smooth onboarding and guided customers in navigating the new usage metering and reporting system effectively.

By diligently following the steps outlined and successfully overcoming the challenges, I am pleased to share the hypothetical result of our efforts. The enhanced usage metering and reporting system proved to be a game-changer for our customers and our company. The new system provided customers with real-time visibility into their team's usage, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and optimize resource allocation.
